Jiuzhaigou — Where Water Was Invented in Colours the Rest of the World Never Learned

Jiuzhaigou (Nine Village Valley) is a UNESCO World Heritage site that looks like the work of an artist who decided reality wasn't colourful enough. The lakes here range from turquoise to emerald to deep sapphire — colours so vivid that early photographs were accused of being photoshopped. The colour comes from dissolved minerals, algae, and the extraordinary clarity of the water, which is filtered through layer upon layer of limestone and travertine.
The valley is named for the nine Tibetan villages that dot the valley, offering a glimpse into a high-altitude culture that has lived in harmony with this fragile ecosystem for centuries. The park's Nuorilang Waterfall is one of China's widest, and Five Flower Lake remains the single most photographed body of water in the country.
📍 Where is Jiuzhaigou?
Jiuzhaigou is located in northern Sichuan Province on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. It's a 1-hour flight from Chengdu or Xi'an, or a 7-hour bus ride from Chengdu (winding mountain roads). The nearest town is Zhangzha (漳扎镇), 5km from the park entrance.

2. Nuorilang Waterfall (诺日朗瀑布) — China's widest travertine waterfall (320m wide, 24m drop). The water cascades over a limestone shelf covered in moss and shrubs. Most impressive in summer when the water flow is at its peak.
3. Long Lake (长海) — The highest and largest lake in the valley (3,100m). A deep sapphire lake fed by snowmelt. The Tibetan prayer flags at the observation deck add to the atmosphere. Best visited in the morning for calm water.
