Zhangjiajie — Where the Mountains of Avatar Became Real

Zhangjiajie is home to one of the most otherworldly landscapes on Earth. Over 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars rise from the forest floor like the spires of a submerged cathedral — some over 200 metres tall, with trees clinging to their summits as if planted by a god with a sense of theatre. When James Cameron's team designed the floating mountains of Pandora for Avatar, they came here for inspiration. The resemblance is uncanny.
Beyond the national park, Zhangjiajie offers Tianmen Mountain — a sheer cliff with a natural arch called Heaven's Gate — the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge, and the famous Bailong Elevator that rises 326 metres up the face of a sandstone cliff.

🍜 Food Guide
Zhangjiajie's cuisine is Xiangxi (West Hunan) cuisine — fiercer and smokier than the Hunan food you find in Changsha. Miao and Tujia minority influences dominate.
Sanxiaguo (Three-Bowl Pot / 三下锅) — The signature Zhangjiajie dish. Three meats (pork, chicken, duck) and vegetables are stewed together in a clay pot over charcoal. The broth is dark, smoky, and layered. Every restaurant has its own version. ¥38-68.
Tuofeng Fish (Traffic Fish / 拖峰鱼) — Local river fish steamed with pickled chilli peppers, ginger, and garlic. The fish is tender, the sauce is sour-savoury-spicy, and the whole thing is served in a wooden trough. ¥48-78.
Stinky Tofu (Choudoufu) — Hunan's famous fermented tofu. Deep-fried until black and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Served with chilli sauce and pickled cabbage. ¥10-15.
Tujia Smoked Pork (土家腊肉) — Pork belly cured over pine wood smoke for weeks. Sliced thin and stir-fried with garlic shoots or green peppers. Deep, primal flavour. ¥35-55.
Ge Fen (葛粉) — A jelly made from kudzu root starch, served cold with honey, vinegar, and nuts. A refreshing dessert after all that spice. ¥8-15.
