The Longmen Grottoes — the thousand-Buddha cliff carving on the Yi River

Luoyang is one of China's great ancient capitals — a city that served as the imperial seat for 13 dynasties over 1,500 years. It is best known today for the Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site where over 100,000 Buddhist statues were carved into the limestone cliffs along the Yi River between 493 and 1127 AD. The scale is staggering: the largest statue, Vairocana Buddha, stands 17 metres tall and was completed in 676 AD under the reign of Empress Wu Zetian.

Beyond the grottoes, Luoyang is the home of the Shaolin Temple — the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and kung fu — and the White Horse Temple, the first Buddhist temple established in China (68 AD). In spring, the entire city erupts in peony flowers, earning Luoyang its title as the "Peony Capital of China."

🗺️ Attractions — Ranked

🔴 Must-See (Don't Miss These)

1. Longmen Grottoes (龙门石窟)

The crown jewel of Luoyang. Over 2,300 caves and niches carved into a kilometre-long limestone cliff face along the Yi River. The sheer density of statuary — over 100,000 individual figures — makes it one of the most concentrated Buddhist art sites in the world. The centrepiece is the Fengxian Temple cave, featuring the 17-metre Vairocana Buddha, whose serene face is said to have been modelled on Empress Wu Zetian herself.

Detail Information
Open 8:00 AM - 6:30 PM (Mar-Oct); 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM (Nov-Feb)
Admission ¥90 (Mar-Oct), ¥60 (Nov-Feb)
Getting there Bus 53, 60, or 81 from city centre (30 min)
Best time 8:00 AM (open) — before the tour groups flood in
Time needed 3-4 hours
🛎️ Strategy: Enter from the west gate, walk along the west cliff (the main concentration of large caves), cross the bridge to the east side for the panoramic view back at the west cliff, then visit the smaller east-side caves and the Bai Yuan (poet's tomb) on the way out. The night illumination (¥40 extra, selected dates) transforms the grottoes into a magical scene.

2. Shaolin Temple (少林寺)

The most famous Buddhist temple in China — the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and the cradle of Chinese martial arts. Founded in 495 AD, the temple complex includes the original meditation hall, the Pagoda Forest (over 200 brick pagodas housing the ashes of past abbots), and the Kung Fu Training Centre where young monks practise from age 6. Daily kung fu performances are held at the training hall.

🛎️ Shaolin Strategy: The temple itself can be seen in 1.5 hours. The main reasons to spend the full day are: (1) the 10:30 AM kung fu performance (included, 40 min), (2) hiking up to the Damo Cave where Bodhidharma (the founder of Chan Buddhism) meditated for nine years, and (3) the Pagoda Forest — the most atmospheric part of the complex. Eat lunch at one of the vegetarian restaurants outside the temple gate (¥20-40).

3. White Horse Temple (白马寺)

The first Buddhist temple in China, founded in 68 AD during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Named after the white horse that carried the first Buddhist sutras from India to China on its back. The temple still stands on its original site — over 1,950 years of continuous religious use. The international pagoda area includes Indian, Thai, and Burmese-style temples built by those countries as cultural gifts.

🍜 Food Guide

Luoyang's cuisine is Henan cuisine — hearty, wheat-based, and deeply connected to the agricultural heartland of China. The city's unique geography produces abundant freshwater fish from the Yellow River.

Luoyang Water Banquet (洛阳水席) — The city's signature dining experience. A full-course banquet of 24 dishes served in sequence, mostly soup-based — hence "water banquet." The dishes alternate between cold appetisers and hot soups, building from mild to intensely flavoured. The most famous dish is Peony Swallow Dish (牡丹燕菜) — a delicate soup with shredded white radish that has been transformed to resemble swallow's nest. The water banquet is designed to be shared by 4-8 people. Full banquet ¥100-200 per person. Book at: Zhen Butong (真不同) restaurant on Zhongzhou Road — the most famous water banquet restaurant since 1895.

Luoyang Beef Soup (洛阳牛肉汤) — The city's breakfast of champions. Beef bones are simmered overnight with star anise, cinnamon, and Sichuan peppercorn. The resulting broth is poured over hand-pulled noodles or served with sesame flatbread (shaobing). ¥8-15. Eat at: Ma Jie Beef Soup (马杰山牛肉汤) near the old town.

Gluten Baozi (Gluten Bun / 面筋包子) — Wheat gluten is braised in a savoury broth, then stuffed into steamed buns with chopped scallions and served with a dipping sauce of vinegar and chilli oil. Soft, springy, and intensely satisfying. ¥10-15.

Yellow River Carp (黄河鲤鱼) — Sweetwater carp from the Yellow River, which Luoyang overlooks. Steamed or braised in a sweet-sour sauce with shredded ginger and spring onions. ¥48-88.

Peony Pastry (牡丹饼) — A delicate pastry filled with sweetened peony petals. The flower flavour is floral, subtle, and surprisingly sophisticated. Available everywhere during the Peony Festival season (April). ¥2-5 per piece.
