Lhasa — The Spiritual Heart of Tibet

At 3,650 metres above sea level, Lhasa is one of the highest cities on Earth. It has been the spiritual and political centre of Tibetan Buddhism for over 1,300 years. The Potala Palace — the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas — rises 13 stories from the slopes of Red Hill, its iconic red-and-white walls visible from every corner of the city. Pilgrims in traditional chuba circle the Jokhang Temple in an unending kora, spinning prayer wheels and chanting sutras.
Visiting Lhasa requires preparation — altitude acclimatisation, a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a tour operator, and a cultural sensitivity that is deeply rewarded. This is a city that has preserved a way of life unlike anywhere else on Earth.
